We are Anna Van Lenten (writer and editor), and James Price (Newsweek photo editor). We curate the photography series at The Half King in Manhattan, where we select rich, compelling documentary photography & film with a narrative thread, and exhibit it in an intimate, lively context.

We aim to make our bi-monthly openings occasions for audience and photographer to enter another world, as, together, we all unpack the photographer’s body of work. This total immersion marries the spontaneity of an anticipated opening with the measured pace of a salon. The result is a group of people whose love of great photography can be realized amongst a community of like-minded enthusiasts.

We feel that the discussions we convene are vital, especially in a world so digitally connected that face-to-face contact can seem unnecessary. And, the photography we champion distils the news swirling around in the media into comprehensible, salient stories.
